I often find many customers and partners don’t take advantage of CRM’s ability to add icons for custom entities. Apart from making your application look ‘less boring’ there are significant usability benefits for your end users. In the Customize Entities menu simply highlight a custom entity and then click More Actions in the toolbar and select Update Icons.
When customizing a system I always make a copy of CRM’s icon collection. You can find this in the inetpub\wwwroot\_imgs folder. Remember to use only the 16×16 and 32×32 icons. My tool of choice for creating and editing icons is Paint.NET. This free graphics editor was originally developed by some college students with some mentoring help from Microsoft. The application lives on today as a side project of a number employees scattered across Microsoft (many of whom were on the original project as students).
