Support recently ran into the error below when using the reverse engineering tool in AX 2012 R2. This problem will exist in AX 2012 too. To reproduce this error we also had to install Visio 2013. The error is was

“Method ‘add’ in COM object of class ‘IVDocuments’ returned error code 0x86DB09C6 (<unknown>) which means: File not found.”

It turns out that Visio 2013 has deprecated features related to UML and data model support. AX relies on these features to create the document in the reverse engineering tool.

Development is looking at other modeling tools, but as of right now the only solution is to use Visio 2010 Premium. Visio 2010 versions lower than premium do not have the proper UML templates.

Side-by-side installation of Visio 2010 and Visio 2013 is supported.

Thanks.
