Hello, this is Jingyuan and Sriram from Remote Desktop Virtualization team. In this blog post, we’re really excited to introduce the new Scale-Out File Server feature in Windows Server 2012 for VDI deployments.

File Servers are widely used in VDI deployments to store server application data, such as Hyper-V virtual machine files, SQL Server database files and user profile disks.

Prior to Windows Server 2012, file server high availability was already available through clustered file servers. This classic type of clustered file server, and thus all the shares associated with it, is online on one node at a time. File shares associated with this type of clustered file server are called clustered file shares. This is sometimes referred to as active-passive.

In Windows Server 2012, a new feature called Scale-Out File Server was introduced. With Scale-Out File Server, all file shares are online on all nodes simultaneously. File shares associated with this type of clustered file server are called scale-out file shares. This is sometimes referred to as active-active .

VDI in Windows Server 2012 supports using Scale-Out File Server to store server application data. If file server high availability and scalability are important to you, we highly encourage you to check out the new Scale-Out File Server feature in Windows Server 2012, and take full advantage of it for your Windows Server 2012 VDI deployment!
