Azure Mythbusters: I can choose any cloud data store for any service!

“Just because I can doesn’t mean I should.”

There’s a whole stack of questions you should be asking yourself around what you’re going to be doing with your data, as well as what data you actually need to capture, that will help determine what data store is most suitable for your use case.

To start with, what form is your data in? Is it a data block, pictures, a JSON document? Any sort of flat output, or a document that needs to be served to an end user – it’s important to know what data is being handled. From there we can look to whether it needs processing, and whether options like Databricks, HDInsight or data warehouses might be suitable.

In this 10 minute video, Glenn and Will run through some of the most important questions you need to be asking yourself when deciding on a data store, including:

  • Is it unstructured or semi-structured data?
  • Is it document storage?
  • Do I need to query that data?
  • How long do I need access to that data for?
  • What it my budget for storing this data?

They also go into detail on each of these points and more, giving examples of what you might need to be considering along the way and which options may be most suitable for you.

Stay tuned for the next instalment of Azure Mythbusters! Until then, here are some useful resources for learning more on the topic of cloud data stores.
