Mobile solutions for health professionals just keep getting better

As I wrote in one of my last blogs, in addition to the Surface Pro 3, there are now a number of clinical-grade devices health professionals can choose from that are designed specifically for their requirements.Mobile solutions for health professionals just keep getting better

It’s great to see that more and more hardware manufacturers are thinking hard about what it takes to provide a mobile device that meets the needs of clinicians and the various environments they work in. For example, HP and Dell both recently came out with tablets and accessories specifically for healthcare. They’ve taken the time to offer very practical features such as hand and shoulder straps, pen holders, and jackets that make it easier for clinicians to carry their devices around. They’re also making sure the devices can be sanitized and include a range of robust security features to protect sensitive patient and health organization data. Enhancements like these can make a real impact on a health professionals’ daily work.

Check them out:

In addition to great progress being made on the hardware front, it’s also exciting to see the mobility advancements being made by health application vendors to provide ever more flexible tools for clinician workflow.

Case in point: Allscripts Wand for Windows. The mobile clinical app takes advantage of Windows 8 touch features for many form factors, so clinicians can have the same experience whether they’re using Allscripts Wand on a tablet, desktop, laptop, or wall-mounted workstation. And they can use various input modalities, whether they’re using one device or many. When clinicians are on the go, they can use pen, touch, voice, and even camera capabilities to capture notes and photos in the patient’s electronic medical record, for example. If they’re back at their desk and want to use keyboard and mouse with the app, they can easily do that, too. Or, if they want to use the Allscripts Wand app on a wall touchscreen, that works, too.

Another example of a mobile solution that’s providing more flexible workflow tools for health professionals is the Paragon Clinician MobileTM application. From a smartphone, clinicians can view patient-specific clinical information, such as the patient list, medication list, order list, vitals, I&O’s, and results. They can also search a staff directory, tap and dial a phone number, review their schedule, and be apprised of incoming information about their patients.

On-the-go information access and workflow tools with the right security, as well as flexibility and consistency across modalities and various devices-from 4-inch smartphones to 85-inch touchscreens-are only going to get better with Windows 10. We’ll be sharing more about that right here, so stay tuned.
