The team is proud to support the sixteenth annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE 16x) at the Pasadena Convention Center, California this week. The community-run, free and open source software event is the largest of its kind in North America. If you’re attending the show, catch up with us in Booth 513 where you can earn prizes and get a pro photo by @JulianCashPhoto. Connect with experts in open source software with cloud app development, DevOps, serverless, containers, machine learning, AI and more.
Watch for live updates online or, if you’re in the area, use promo code MSFT for 50% off SCaLE registration and join us for the sessions below.
Also, we’ll be at DevOps Days LA on Friday (same location) – more details on that below too.

Friday, March 9th

Workshop: Deploying Open Source Apps in the Cloud with DevOps (9:30am – 12:30pm)
Kyle Bunting, Partnering Consultant at Solliance; Room 212
Gain a better understanding of how to integrate and deploy hosted open source software (OSS) workloads into the cloud. Migrate an existing MERN (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js) application from a hosted environment into Azure PaaS, leveraging DevOps tools.
Attendees will learn how to:

  • Provision Web App for Containers for hosting OSS applications
  • Migrate a MongoDB instance into Cosmos DB
  • Implement serverless technologies, such as Logic Apps and Azure Functions, to enhance OSS app functionality
  • Provision an Azure Container Registry
  • Build Docker images and push them into the Azure Container Registry

DevOps Days LA (9am – 5:30pm)
On Friday, you’ll also find us at DevOps LA, which is co-located at the Pasadena Convention Center. You can connect with us, any time throughout the day, at the sponsor table. Pick our brains and ask us about Azure DevOps project experiences in the Azure portal, or get a full pipeline demo of VSTS. We want to hear what projects you are working on and how Microsoft can contribute to your success. Access to DevOpsDay LA is available with any level of SCaLE registration, so pop over if you have an open window.

Saturday, March 10th

Keynote: Microsoft’s Open Source Software Evolution (10am -11am)
John Gossman, Microsoft Azure, Distinguished Engineer; Ballroom DE
Microsoft has a long and evolving history with open source software. John Gossman will speak to the evolution within Microsoft over the past 15+ years as it grew from the company that competed with Linux at the turn of the Millennium to become the company that is actively contributing to the kernel and creating large active open source communities around VS Code, TypeScript, .NET Core and Powershell.
The Open CIO Series: navigating today’s open source landscape (4:30pm-5:30pm)
Jose Miguel Parrella, Microsoft, Open Source Product Manager; Room 107
Open source is pervasive in our industry, and CIOs no longer ignore how their team relies on open source to deliver what IT is expected to do – regardless of size, industry or geography. Yet, many CIOs feel lost on a rapidly changing, almost divergent open source ecosystem and feel they lack foresight to lead a sustainable open source strategy. What’s going on with container orchestrators? Should I be looking into an application platform or maybe serverless? What’s up with Postgres compared to the plethora of open source databases that have been launched the last few years? How should I read Foundations? Should I join them? Should I trust VC funding key open source projects?
Follow us @OpenAtMicrosoft to stay connected during SCaLE and DevOps Days LA. Hope to see you there!
