Making R the Enterprise Standard for Cross-Platform Analytics

Last year Microsoft acquired Revolution Analytics, the leading commercial provider of software and services for R, an open source, statistical programming language that's widely used for statistical computing and predictive analytics. Since then, there has been a steady cadence of updates to Revolution R Open and Revolution R Enterprise, as well as the integration of R with Microsoft Azure, SQL Server, PowerBI, and Cortana Analytics.
This month, Microsoft's Machine Learning team announced a long list of updates to bring R-based analytics to new platforms, developers and the R community, including:

Revolution R Enterprise for Hadoop, Linux and Teradata is now available as Microsoft R Server with all the benefits of Microsoft's enterprise-grade quality, support and purchasing options.
A new Microsoft R Server Developer Edition with all the features of the commercial version will be available as a free download.
The Microsoft Data Science Virtual Machine will include a pre-installed and pre-configured version of Microsoft R Server Developer Edition.
Revolution R Open is now Microsoft R Open and is available as a free download.
Microsoft R Server is available to all students for academic use with the Microsoft DreamSpark program.

"Delivering Microsoft R Server across multiple platforms allows our enterprise customers to standardize advanced analytics on one core tool, regardless of whether they are using Hadoop (Hortonworks, Cloudera and MapR), Linux (Red Hat and SUSE) or Teradata," wrote Joseph Sirosh, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Data Group. "For Windows, Microsoft R Server will be included in SQL Server 2016 as SQL Server R Services and the combined bundle is less expensive than RRE standalone. Until SQL Server 2016 is released, Revolution R Enterprise for Windows remains available as a standalone product."

Feeling Super Human? The Azure team has created hands-on-labs that let you try popular open source technologies in the Azure Marketplace, including Hortonworks, Chef and Docker. With each lab, you'll gain experience in big data, infrastructure automation and app containerization, to help you take your work and business to ‘super human’ levels. Complete the lab and choose between a Crazyflie 2.0 mini drone or an Azure Pass.

Here's what to expect with each lab:
Hortonworks: Modernize an architecture
Realize the full potential and power of Big Data with Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), the completely open source Apache Hadoop data platform architected for the enterprise.
Hortonworks Sandbox is the easiest way to get started with HDP, and in this lab you will create and transfer data between an Azure SQL Database and Hortonworks Sandbox. You will then load the data into a Hive table in Hadoop.
Chef: Automate an infrastructure
Chef turns infrastructure into code. With Chef, you can automate how you build, deploy, and manage your infrastructure. Your infrastructure becomes as versionable, testable, and repeatable as application code.
This Chef lab is comprised of scenarios that will cover the setup of a Chef 12 Server in Azure, installing cookbooks and bootstrapping your choice of a either a Windows or Linux node.
Docker: Containerize an application
Docker allows you to package an application with all of its dependencies into a standardized unit for software development.
In this lab you will create a docker enabled virtual machine from Azure Marketplace. You will then go through basic docker commands. After that you will learn how to dockerize a sample application. You will also configure a multi-container application using docker compose.
