The SQL Server 2008 R2 August Community Technology Preview (CTP) rollout continues today with the availability of the Microsoft SQL Server StreamInsight August CTP. We’re excited to announce that SQL Server StreamInsight is officially shipping as a component of SQL Server 2008 R2, which is scheduled to be available in H1 2010. StreamInsight will bring a low-latency complex event processing (CEP) platform to SQL Server, and will enable organizations to derive insights from streaming data in near real-time in scenarios such as web analytics, algorithmic trading and industrial process control.
The preview is available immediately for TechNet and MSDN subscribers, and will be generally available on August 19th. Visit http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee315247.aspx to get started, and be sure to check out other SQL Server 2008 R2 community technology previews on the site.
With SQL Server StreamInsight, customers and partners realize faster time to solution and equal or better performance and manageability than competitive alternatives. SQL Server StreamInsight allows organizations to process continuous high volume streams of data with low latency in milliseconds. What differentiates our platform even more is the ability for customization; customers and partners can use their own proprietary algorithms to build custom applications, ISVs can build industry specific solutions and embedded system developers can offer low latency processing. According to Dr. J. Patrick Kennedy, Founder and CEO of OSIsoft, Inc. “When this technology platform is offered from Microsoft next year, we can offer PI users streaming complex analytics with enhanced performance and scalability to solve problems in new domains such as Smart Grid, energy management, and sustainability.”
In addition, SQL Server StreamInsight’s integration with proven Microsoft development tools and frameworks such as LINQ, Visual Studio, and the .NET Framework help customers and partners eliminate set up and configuration hassles to save time and money.
As a component of service oriented architectures (SOA), SQL Server StreamInsight analyzes streams of event data and helps respond to patterns in these event streams. StreamInsight can combine with SOA platforms such as BizTalk Server to listen to and track events from multiple data sources. The patterns detected by StreamInsight then can be analyzed and used to make better business decisions.
SQL Server StreamInsight’s ability to derive insights from data streams and act in near real time provides significant business benefits. With increasing volume and speed of data, customers are looking for ways to better utilize and act on this information in real-time. We are delivering a solution as part of our data platform to help address these customer needs. Some of the possible scenarios include:
- Algorithmic trading and fraud detection for financial services
- Industrial process control (chemicals, oil and gas) for manufacturing
- Electric grid monitoring and advanced metering for utilities
- Click stream web analytics
- Network and data center system monitoring.
