Today, Hortonworks released the beta for the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) for Windows, the industry’s first 100% Open Source Apache Hadoop-based distribution for Windows. With Windows Server holding 73% marketshare in 2012*, HDP for Windows dramatically broadens the accessible market for Hadoop. This release is the result of a deep engineering partnership between Hortonworks and Microsoft with the goal to help accelerate the adoption of Hadoop in the enterprise by diversifying the number of platforms that it can run on.
As part of our overall big data approach, we are deeply invested in ensuring customers have choice and interoperability when building and running Hadoop-based solutions. This includes providing customers the choice to deploy our own Apache-Hadoop based distribution on-premises and the ability to manage Hadoop data in the cloud on Windows Azure. Applications built on HDP for Windows should just work on Microsoft’s HDInsight server and the Azure HDInsight service.
We’ve been partnering closely with Hortonworks to bring the community new Hadoop solutions for Windows and we’re excited to take this next step. HDP for Windows continues our joint commitment to opening up the Hadoop platform to as many people as possible.
