Getting Smart About Smart Cards

Beta 2 of Certificate Lifecycle Manager (CLM) went live today, available here.  CLM helps lower the costs (and avoid the headaches) of issuing and managing smart cards by providing workflow and policy tools for admins.  No custom development required and CLM can enable users to self-issue cards, too.

More and more companies are looking to smart cards over username and passwords for access security , e.g. Frost & Sullivan predicts 126 million smart card shipments for corporate use in 2010, up from 28.5 million in 2004.  Governments are moving even faster:  691 million predicted for 2009, up from 27 million in 2004.The U.S. federal government has started issuing smart card-based ID credentials to all federal employees and subcontractors.

In related news, Gemalto, the market leader in smart cards and related services, announced their support for CLM beta 2 in their Gemalto .NET Smartcard. Gemalto customers include large enterprises such as Boeing, Exxon Mobil, Nissan, Pfizer and Procter & Gamble.

The final version of CLM will ship early next year.
